Samsung has officially taken the covers off its latest generation of foldable smartphones, bringing major design overhauls to the table. While the premium Ultra variants continue to push boundaries, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 emerges as the most intriguing release thanks to its completely revamped ergonomics and form factor.

Today, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8. While the Ultra remains the company's flagship foldable, the standard Fold 8 is arguably the more interesting device thanks to its completely redesigned form factor.

Samsung has moved away from the tall and narrow design used by previous Galaxy Z Fold models. Instead, the Fold 8 adopts a wider cover display and a more compact overall footprint, making it feel very different from earlier generations.

After spending some time with the device, here are our first impressions.

Design

The biggest talking point is undoubtedly the design. Closed, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels much shorter and wider than previous Fold models thanks to its 5.5-inch cover display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Once unfolded, it transforms into a 7.6-inch tablet-like display with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Despite the larger footprint, Samsung has kept the device remarkably light. At just 201 grams, it's the company's lightest book-style foldable to date.

That lightweight design immediately stands out in the hand. The Fold 8 feels compact, comfortable, and surprisingly playful to use. The wider cover display also makes everyday tasks feel much more natural than on previous Galaxy Z Fold devices.

In particular, social media apps, web browsing, and even YouTube videos feel well suited to the new aspect ratio without immediately needing to unfold the device.

Display

Opening the Fold 8 reveals a 7.6-inch inner display that serves as a compact tablet for productivity and entertainment.

Samsung has also significantly reduced the visibility of the crease. A new internal structure, including a titanium alloy plate beneath the display, improves both durability and crease reduction. The crease is still visible under certain lighting conditions, but while actually using the phone it becomes much less noticeable.

The display itself reaches up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness and features an anti-reflective coating that should make outdoor viewing considerably more comfortable.

The larger display also lends itself well to reading articles, browsing the web, watching videos, and consuming short-form content. Videos in particular are a highlight, as you get a much larger viewing area compared to Samsung's previous Folds and also the Fold 8 Ultra.

Performance and battery

Powering the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, paired with a 4,800mAh battery with support for 45W charging.

Interestingly, Samsung is using silicon-carbon battery technology for the first time. The company says it has been conservative with how much silicon it uses in order to maintain long-term battery health throughout the device's promised seven years of Android OS updates.

The new battery technology allows Samsung to keep the Fold 8 exceptionally thin while also increasing battery capacity. However, real-world battery performance is something we'll need to evaluate in our full review.

Cameras

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a dual rear camera setup consisting of a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera.

The ultra-wide camera uses the same sensor found on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, while the primary camera is shared with the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+.

For selfies, there's a 10MP shooter on the cover display and another 10MP one on the main display. The latter has a wider field of view, similar to the inner selfie camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Although it lacks the advanced camera hardware found on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung has still included several new AI-powered video features. We'll be taking a closer look at those, along with overall camera quality, in our full review.

Software

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 ships with One UI 9 and includes Samsung's familiar foldable software features, including the ability to use the rear cameras for higher-quality selfies.

One notable omission, however, is Flex Mode and any related software functionality. Unlike previous Galaxy Z Fold models, the Fold 8's redesigned hinge doesn't hold its position at intermediate angles.

Instead, the device naturally opens fully once it reaches a certain point, meaning Flex Mode experiences are no longer available on this model. Those capabilities remain exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

First impressions

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels like Samsung's biggest rethink of the Fold series since the original model launched.

Rather than focusing on camera hardware or productivity features, Samsung has prioritised portability and everyday usability. The lighter weight, wider cover display, and compact design make the Fold 8 feel approachable in a way previous Galaxy Z Fold devices didn't.

Whether the dual-camera setup and lack of Flex Mode prove to be worthwhile compromises remains to be seen, but our first impressions are very positive. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is comfortable to hold, enjoyable to use, and introduces a form factor that could appeal to a much broader audience than Samsung's previous book-style foldables.
